This Private Monument creates a peaceful sanctuary and memorial by using classic forms and enduring materials. The client worked with residential architects Solis Betancourt to renovate and restore this family mausoleum located in Fairfax, Virginia.

Notable elements include two large entry gates with heavy-duty mortised hinges and two operable metal screens fabricated by Wiemann Metalcraft under the management of Coldspring Granite. Judges appreciated the exceptional design and craftsmanship of the custom bronze work, which features solid metal grilles and custom rim-lock hardware with a light patina. The completed gates are coated with a UV-stable lacquer that resists weathering, making it possible to maintain the smooth, satin aesthetic with little needed maintenance.

The gates and screens utilize C38500 architectural bronze alloy. Metal artisans select this material not only because it is durable, easy to form and machine, factors that make it a good choice for doors, handrails, and other applications.
