Seeking to revitalize University College, Kohn Shnier and ERA architects worked in association to bring new life to one of the oldest buildings at the University of Toronto. The project focused on re-introducing a library on the building’s second level and reactivating its south wing by enabling student-focused programming. In addition, the design team had to improve the building’s accessibility by removing physical barriers, providing ramps, and adding a new elevator.

Clad in copper scales fabricated and installed by Cladco, the elevator tower transforms the look of the building by taking cues from the existing eclectic and whimsical gothic motifs of the college. The result is both contemporary and familiar. Initially the crisp copper panels strike a pleasing contrast with the heritage masonry, and as the copper ages, its patina will blend over time with the stone. Lighting concealed under the panels creates a dramatic effect
